The county is full of stern memorials to her stormy past.

 The castles of Pickering, Scarborough and Knaresborough, Pontefract where Richard the 2nd was murdered and of course there’s Castle Howard.

Yorkshire is also the county of Bede and nowhere in England is there so much tangible evidence of the diversity and magnificence of Medieval Christianity: The ruins of the Cistercian abbeys of Fountains and Rievaulx and the extensive Benedictine houses of Selby and Whitby: The Augustinian Priory at Bolton and the lofty glories of the York Minster.
